Using Google Calendar in the Classroom
Lisette Blanco-Cerda uses Google Calendar in the classroom as a way to keep current with any changes that occur during a typical semester. Rather than updating course calendars in a word processing document, re-posting that document, and then making corrections yet again, using a Google calendar can help lessen the work. Simply changing an event in Google calendar on a smart phone changes that same event on the calendars of all who've synched or been invited to the Google calendar. Since Google Calendar can easily synch up with students’ smart phone calendars, students are given immediate access to class schedules and any changes therein. Click this link for an example of Lisette's British Literature I online class calendar.
Since Google Calendar can easily be modified and since Google Calendar can synch to students calendars on their smart phones, it's easy to make the Google Calendar canon. In other words, assignments, homework, readings, and even attachments can appear on the class's Google Calendar, making any changes, handouts, and expectations more accessible to students.
Note: Depending on when you read this page, when visiting Lisette's sample class calendar you may need to click a few months back to at least May 2014. That way you can see more entries in Lisette's British Literature I calendar.
